
U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) descended into the Texas Legislature this week to “cheer the House on” as the debate concerning school choice heats up in the state.
“The Texas House of Representatives is taking up what I think is the single most important issue before the Texas Legislature, and that is school choice,” Cruz told reporters Thursday.
“School choice,” he continued, “is the civil rights issue of the 21st century.”
This is not the first time this year that Cruz has “urged” the Texas House to support school choice. In February, Cruz penned a letter to House Speaker Dustin Burrows (R-Lubbock) to “encourage” support for education savings accounts (ESA).
However, Cruz did warn about “attempts to compromise or weaken” the legislation, writing it is “essential the final bill provides a pathway to expand the program in the future.”
